Warner was in second place going into the final event of the first day, until a spirited effort in the 400m saw him pull back ahead, but only seven points clear of defending Gotzis champ Kai Kazmirek of Germany. Warner’s points breakdown is as follows: 10.15s in the 100m (1059); 7.12m long jump (842); 14.64m shot put (768); 2.00m high jump (803); and an exciting 47.13s clocking in the 400m, where Kazmirek edged him at the very end. Warner’s points total is 4424 to 4417 for Kazmirek, with Jeremy Taiwo of the United States in third with 4373.

The 100m time for Warner is the fastest ever recorded in a decathlon.
