Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard named WTA “Newcomer of the Year”

Emerging as Canada’s tennis darling, Eugenie Bouchard received a fitting punctuation on her season by being named WTA “Newcomer of the Year.”

In 2013, as a 19-year-old, Bouchard rocketed over 100 places from no. 144 finishing at no. 32. Moreover, that career-high ranking came after making her first WTA final at Osaka.

In addition to the result in Japan, Genie Bouchard posted a quarter-final or better appearance in four other WTA events. Each result was earned with maturity, power and fitness, and as the highest-ranked teenager in the women’s game, Bouchard clearly threatens to become one of the game’s elite.

She is also the first Canadian to be named “Newcomer of the Year” since Carling Bassett in 1983. Milos Raonic won the ATP’s “Newcomer of the Year” award in 2011.
