An exciting Day 5 with the Women’s Hockey Team taking center stage this morning in a very close match up versus their arch rivals Team USA, with both teams entering the game undefeated in Sochi. Many Canadians while at work and attending class, right across the country, tuned in to watch Team Canada bounce back after Team USA led 1-0 after 2 periods. Meghan Agosta-Marciano, who’s celebrating her 27th birthday, scored the tying and winning goals! Flag-bearer Hayley Wickenheiser scored the 2nd goal to give Canada their first lead of the match up in the 3rd period. Canada beat USA 3-2, securing 1st place in Group A and advance to the Semi-Finals.
Good karma is paying big dividends for Team Canada, this selfless act paid off with a Silver medal in the Men’s 1,000-metre Speed Skating event. Gilmore Junio had given his spot in the event to training partner Denny Morrison who had fallen during his time trials, because Junio felt it would be “in the best interest of the team!” Morrison proved Junio correct, as Morrison skated against the Dutch 500-metre Olympic Champion finishing with a time of 1 min 08.43 seconds to secure 2nd place with six of the top skaters remaining. Denny Morrison took home his first individual Olympic medal, Silver!
Team Jennifer Jones continued Canada’s winning streak in Women’s Curling with 9-6 win over Great Britain. Team Canada led through most of the game, moving ahead on a great shot by Jennifer Jones in the 5th end scoring 3 points, breaking a tie! Team Jennifer Jones Olympic record is 3-0.
Men’s Curling Team Brad Jacobs is back into the win column after beating host country Russia 7-4. Canada never trailed in the match up, scoring a pair in the 2nd end, and 4 more in the 5th end. With a hammer in the ninth, Jacobs sealed the win with a single in the 10th end. Team Jacobs improved their Olympic record to 2-1.
