Canada names squad for FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup

One World Cup is over and it’s on to the next one for FIFA, this time on Canadian soil.

The Under-20 Women’s World Cup starts in August. Unlike the global football event that just concluded in Brazil, Canada will not only participate in the finals of this one, but has a squad that may turn heads ahead of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in 11 months.

A total of 16 countries – the host and 15 qualifying nations – will take part. Canada is in Group A with Ghana, Finland and North Korea. The opening match for Canada will be on August 5, 8 p.m. ET at the National Soccer Stadium (also known as BMO Field) in Toronto.

On Wednesday, Canada named the 21 players on its squad for the tournament.

The Goalkeepers are Kailen Sheridan, Marie-Joelle Vandal and Rylee Foster.

Canada’s defence features national team members Sura Yekka, Kadeisha Buchanan and Rebecca Quinn. Team captain Kinley McNicoll is back there, as are Kylie Davis, Victoria Pickett, Lindsay Agnew and Jordane Carvery.

The midfield has one national team player, Ashley Lawrence. Ashley Campbell, Jessie Fleming, Vanessa Gregoire, Sarah Kinzner and Emma Fletcher are the other midfielders named.

Four forwards named to the team are Nichelle Prince, Janine Beckie, Amandine Pierre-Louis and Valerie Sanderson.

The head coach of Team Canada is Andrew Olivieri.

Canada’s second group match is on August 8 against Finland in Toronto before closing out the round robin phase in Montreal’s Olympic Stadium on August 12 against North Korea.

The matches will be shown on CBC.
