Commonwealth Games: Bezzoubenko bags golden hat-trick
The third day of Commonwealth Games started with a golden hat-trick for Patricia Bezzoubenko – the rhythmic gymnast finishing with six medals in Glasgow.
Bezzoubenko had already won two gold medals in the opening days of competition. On Thursday she was part of the Canadian women’s team that took the all-around team event, the next day she won the individual portion.
On Saturday Bezzoubenko won the individual hoop, ball and clubs competitions to add a third, fourth and fifth gold medal to her collection. Next, a bronze for Bezzoubenko arrived in ribbon, bringing her medal haul to six.
Canada’s second silver medal of the Games came from shooters Desmond Vamplew and James Paton in the fullbore rifle pairs. It was the country’s second shooting medal in Glasgow.
Another silver medal in Glasgow was won at the pool on Saturday in the women’s 4x200m relay. The team of Samantha Cheverton, Brittany MacLean, Alyson Ackman and Emily Overholt finished between Australia and England on the podium.
A third Canadian medal in Judo at the Games – all bronze – was also attained Saturday, latest one via Ana Laura Portuondo in the 78kg women’s category.
At time of posting Canada was up to 16 medals (seven gold, three silver and six bronze), putting the country fourth in the official table sorted by gold.
