Who to keep an eye on at the upcoming Rowing Worlds

The World Rowing Championships kick off this Sunday in Amsterdam, and the Canadian boats should be keeping stroke with the best of them.

Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls

Athletes: Lindsay Jennerich & Patricia Obee
The Olympic tandem of Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee are coming into form, having recently won bronze at the Lucerne World Cup. The duo will be aiming for a return to the world championship podium, having won silver in 2011, but will be challenged by crews from Great Britain, Australia and Italy.

The Canadian women’s quadruple sculls boat are among the world’s best, having won silver at last year’s World Rowing Championships. Coming off of a silver at the Lucerne World Cup, they should challenge the dominant German boat for gold at this year’s Worlds.

The women’s eight boat is rich on experience, as it features four members of the silver medallist team from London 2012 (Natalie Mastracci, Ashley Brzozowicz, Lauren Wilkinson and Lesley Thompson-Willie). The eight is coming off impressive gold and silver medal performances at the last two World Cup stops this year but will be facing a major challenge in the Americans who are unbeaten in this event since 2006.

London 2012 silver medallists in the eight – Will Crothers, Rob Gibson, and Conlin McCabe – have joined forces in the four with Kai Langerfeld, whose father York Langerfeld rowed at the Montreal 1976 Games. The new boat seems to be getting better with every race and recently took home bronze from the World Cup in Lucerne.
