Funeral for Daundre Barnaby to be held in Mississauga

Canadian sprinter Daundre Barnaby’s passing shocked the national sport landscape when the 24-year-old drowned during training camp at St. Kitts in late March.

Barnaby had become a Canadian citizen in time for London 2012, where he competed for his new country in the men’s 400-metre event. Two years later the Athletics Canada speedster represented his nation on another big international stage, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

On March 27, just over three months from the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games where Barnaby could have competed at home in front of friends and family, an undertow in the ocean swept him away as athletes were enjoying down time in the ocean.

The Olympian’s family will hold his funeral on April 18 in Mississauga, Ontario. To help with expenses, including the transfer of Barnaby’s body back to Canada, and to set up a scholarship fund in his name, a donations page has been created.
