Day 5 Recap: Ellie Black wins her fourth and fifth medals of TO2015

The torrid pace of winning medals continued on Day 5 with big performances in artistic gymnastics, rowing and swimming.

The other sports that saw Canadians reach the podium on Wednesday were shooting (women’s 25m pistol, gold), tennis (mixed doubles, silver), water polo (men’s bronze) and weightlifting (men’s +105kg, silver). All told, Canada added another 19 medals to bring the country’s Toronto 2015 total to 83 so far (33 in the gold column to stay in first).

On the final day of artistic gymnastics competition, Ellie Black became the first athlete at TO2015 to win five medals, adding two more golds on Wednesday. Black took top spot on the beam with a score of 15.050 and followed it up by finishing first in the floor exercise with a 14.400. Her teammate Victoria-Kayen Woo joined her on the podium, finishing with the bronze medal on beam. On the horizontal bar, Kevin Lytwyn won the first medal of Toronto 2015, for the Canadian men’s gymnastics team, taking silver. Lytwyn scored 15.475 to finish behind Colombian Jossimar Calvo Moreno.

Black described the entire experience so far: “This was more than I expected, this has been incredible. The support here has been amazing, I’m so proud of our team coming in silver, and individually in my finals I was not expecting half of this. So just to come in here and be able to do that in front of the home crowd and have everyone support is incredible. So thank you to everyone”

Canada’s rowers won three more golds and a silver on the water to conclude the competition in St. Catharines. They took first place in the men’s eight (Julien Bahain, Martin Barakso, Will Crothers, Will Dean, Mike Evans, Jacob Koudys, Kai Langerfeld, Conlin McCabe, Tim Schrijver), the men’s lightweight four (Maxwell Lattimer, Brendan Hodge, Nicolas Pratt, Eric Woelfl), and men’s single sculls (Rob Gibson).

Wednesday was another huge day in the pool for Canada with seven medals. Hilary Caldwell and Dominique Bouchard won gold and silver, respectively, in the women’s 200m backstroke. Also finishing 1-2 were Kierra Smith and Martha McCabe, respectively, in the women’s 200m breaststroke. Richard Funk took silver in the men’s 200m breaststroke and Emily Overholt took silver in the women’s 200m freestyle. The men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team (Ryan Cochrane, Stefan Milosevic, Jeremy Bagshaw, Alec Page) swam to third place, but were upgraded to silver following the disqualification of the United States. After a protest, the disqualification was overturned and Canada returned to the bronze medal position.

Lynda Kiejko took home her second gold medal of Toronto 2015 on Wednesday. She won the women’s 25m pistol final over American Sandra Uptagrafft.

George Kobaladze won weightlifting silver in the men’s +105kg weight class. He lifted 168kg in the snatch and 208kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 376kg.

Tennis

The Canadian mixed doubles team of Philip Bester and Gaby Dabrowski were unable to defeat the Argentinians in the gold medal match. Dabrowski will have another shot at gold on Thursday when she and partner Carol Zhao play in the women’s doubles final.

Water Polo

Canada’s men defeated Argentina 16-8 in the bronze medal game. John Conway led the way with four goals and goalkeeper Dusan Aleksic saved 8 of the 16 shots he faced.
