Rio 2016 Athletics: Theisen-Eaton sixth on Day 1; McBride to 800m semis
Athletics Canada athletes officially joined the Rio 2016 party on Friday, taking centre stage at the Olympic Stadium in the Maracana Zone.
Here’s a recap of Team Canada’s performances so far.
Women’s Heptathlon

Brianne Theisen-Eaton was the first Canadian on the track, competing in the 100 metre hurdles. The world silver medallist placed sixth overall in a time of 13.18 seconds. Theisen-Eaton moved up to fifth overall, after clearing a season’s best of 1.86m in high jump. She followed up with a throw of 13.36m in shot put, before a tough 200m heat (24.18s), left the Canadian in sixth after the first day of competition.
Men’s 800m

Canada’s Brandon McBride easily won his 800m heat, looking very comfortable as he crossed the line in 1:45.99s, to qualify for the semifinals in seventh. Anthony Romaniw placed sixth in his opening run, his time of 1:46.59s will not advance.
Women’s shot put
Olympic rookies Brittany Crew and Taryn Suttie, made their debut in the qualifying round of women’s shot put. Crew, who won Canada’s Olympic trials in July, placed 18th with a toss of 17.45m, Suttie finished 28th with throw of 16.74m.
Women’s 10,000m
Natasha Wodak and Lanni Marchant made their Olympic debuts in the 10,000m, registered season best performances in the event final. Wodak led the way finishing 22nd in a time of 31:53.14s, Marchant – who will also compete in the marathon – followed closely behind her in 25th (32:04.21).
