Short track: William Dandjinou wins gold as Canada finishes Seoul World Cup with six medals
William Dandjinou and Steven Dubois were both on the top step of the podium this weekend at the Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Seoul, South Korea.
After winning a silver medal in the men’s 1500m on Saturday, Dandjinou improved his performance to cross the finish line of the same distance with gold on Sunday. The 22-year-old skater led the race with three laps to go and maintained his lead until victory, edging out Korea’s Park Ji Won. Dubois took bronze.
Dandjinou’s exceptional season continues, as he has won five individual medals in the first four World Cup legs of the season, including two golds.
It was a second podium finish of the weekend for Dubois, who won gold in the 1000m on Saturday, finishing 0.014 seconds ahead of South Korea’s Daeheon Hwang. Bronze medal winner Pascal Dion joined his team-mate on the podium.
Dubois, 26, finishes 2023 at the top of the men’s World Cup short track speed skating rankings. His 683 points put him slightly ahead of Park (681), with Dandjinou completing the top 3 with 604 points.
Canada also completed another double on Saturday, this time in the 1500m, with Dandjinou and Félix Roussel taking silver and bronze respectively. South Korea’s Ji Won Park took first place.
Canada concludes the first half of the World Cup season, which included four legs, with 23 medals.
