Santiago 2023: Team Canada at the end of Day 13

SANTIAGO, CHILE (November 2, 2023) – Team Canada added two gold, five silver and three bronze to its medal total on Day 13 at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Here is what you need to know.

SCHEDULE/RESULTS: Day 13 Results and Day 14 Schedule

  • Athletics
    • Team Canada started its night at the track with a double podium finish in the men’s 1500m. Charles Philibert-Thiboutot (Quebec City, Que.) was crowned Pan Am Games champion in the event while Robert Heppenstall (Hamilton, Ont.) captured silver.
    • Sarah Mitton (Brooklyn, N.S.) put on a gold medal performance in the women’s shot put, bettering her sixth place result from her Pan Am Games debut at Lima 2019. 
    • Julie-Anne Staehli (Lucknow, Ont.) captured bronze in the women’s 5000m in her first Pan Am Games.
  • Bowling
    • François Lavoie (Quebec City, Que.) and Mitch Hupé (Winnipeg, Man.) claimed silver in the men’s doubles. Lavoie previously won gold in the event on home soil at Toronto 2015. Santiago 2023 marks Hupé’s first Pan Am Games appearance.
  • Fencing
    • Team Canada won silver in both the men’s team épée and the women’s team foil. Canada currently has eight medals in the sport at Santiago 2023 with more competition still to come on Days 14 and 15.
  • Sailing 
    • Canada is assured of an Olympic spot in the new discipline of women’s kite. Emily Bugeja (Vancouver, B.C.) finished sixth in the event, making Canada the top-ranked country from North America and the Caribbean not yet qualified for Paris 2024.
  • Wrestling – Freestyle
    • Three Canadian wrestlers captured medals in their respective weight class:
      • Hannah Taylor (Summerside, P.E.I), silver in the women’s 57kg
      • Hunter Lee (Flin Flon, Man.), bronze in the men’s 86kg
      • Olivia Di Bacco (Orillia, Ont.), bronze in the women’s 68kg
