Santiago 2023: Team Canada at the end of Day 14


SANTIAGO, CHILE (November 3, 2023) – Team Canada added three gold, five silver and five bronze to its medal total on Day 14 at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Here is what you need to know.

TEAM CANADA’S MEDAL COUNT: 

GOLD: 40 | SILVER: 44 | BRONZE: 55 | TOTAL: 139

SCHEDULE/RESULTS: Day 14 Results and Day 15 Schedule

  • Artistic Swimming
    • Canada captured bronze in the mixed team event. 
    • The team event underwent significant changes from previous Pan Am Games, following the new Olympic format in which the winner was determined by the aggregate score from three different performances: the technical routine, the free routine, and the acrobatic routine.
  • Canoe/Kayak – Sprint
    • Canadian paddlers reached the podium in every final that was raced today, capturing three gold, a silver and a bronze:
      • Michelle Russell (Fall River, N.S.) – gold, women’s K-1 500m
      • Ian Gaudet (Dartmouth, N.S.)  and Simon McTavish (Oakville, Ont.) – gold, men’s K-2 500m
      • Alix Plomteaux (Lac-Beauport, Que.) and Craig Spence (Dartmouth, N.S.) – gold, men’s C-2 500m
      • Canada – silver, women’s K-4 500m 
      • Sophia Jensen (Chelsea, Que.)  – bronze, women’s C-1 200m 
  • Fencing
    • With one day of competition remaining for Canadian fencers, the team brought their sport’s medal tally in Santiago to 10 after capturing silver in both the men’s team foil and women’s team sabre.
  • Field Hockey
    • The Canadian men’s field hockey team captured bronze. 
    • This win secures the team the last Pan American spot in the Olympic Qualifier tournaments scheduled for January 2024 where they can punch their ticket to Paris 2024.
  • Karate
    • Claudia Laos-Loo (Surrey, B.C.) won bronze in the women’s individual kata during her Pan Am Games debut.
  • Sailing 
    • Canadian sailors picked up two medals today. Ali ten Hove (Kingston, Ont.) and Mariah Millen (Toronto, Ont.) won silver in the women’s skiff (49er FX) while Will Jones (Jerseyville, Ont.) and Justin Barnes (Pickering, Ont.) took the bronze in the men’s skiff (49er).
    • Both duos qualified spots for Canada for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in their respective events as the top boat in their class from North America and the Caribbean that was not already qualified.
  • Squash
    • Canadians added a second medal in squash on Day 14 from a pair of players making their Pan Am Games debuts:
      • George Crowne (Oakville, Ont.)/Nicole Bunyan (Victoria, B.C.), mixed doubles silver
  • Water Polo
    • The Canadian women’s water polo defeated Brazil to advance to tomorrow’s gold medal match. The team will play Team USA in hopes of capturing gold and securing an Olympic berth for Paris 2024.
    • The Canadian men will play for the bronze medal.
