Santiago 2023: Team Canada at the end of Day 15


SANTIAGO, CHILE (November 4, 2023) – Team Canada added six gold, eight silver and six bronze to its medal total on Day 15 at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Here is what you need to know.

  • Athletics
    • Ethan Katzberg (Nanaimo, B.C.) set a new Pan American record (80.96m) on his way to winning gold in the men’s hammer throw. 
    • Jean-Simon Desgagnés (Saint Ferréol-les-Neiges, Que.) won gold in the men’s 3000m steeplechase while Alycia Butterworth (Parksville, B.C.) secured silver on the women’s side.
  • Breaking
    • Philip “Phil Wizard” Kim (Vancouver, B.C.) was crowned the first Pan Am Games champion in men’s breaking. With that gold medal finish, Kim punched his ticket to Paris 2024 where the sport will make its Olympic debut.
  • Canoe/Kayak – Sprint
    • Canada had another big morning on the water with one gold, one silver and two bronze to close out the canoe/kayak slalom and sprint programs with 14 total medals:
      • Katie Vincent (Mississauga, Ont) and Sloan MacKenzie (Windsor Junction, N.S.), gold in the women’s C-2 500m 
      • Canada – silver in the men’s K-4 500m 
      • Connor Fitzpatrick (Dartmouth, N.S.), bronze in the men’s  C-1 1000m 
      • Courtney Stott (Pickering, Ont.) and Maddy Schmidt (Ottawa, Ont.), bronze in the women’s K-2 500m 
  • Fencing
    • The men’s sabre team captured gold while the women’s épée team claimed silver. That brings fencing’s total medals at Santiago 2023 to 12, the most Canada has won in the sport at a single Pan Am Games. 
  • Gymnastics – Trampoline
    • Keegan Soehn (Red Deer, Alta.) and Rémi Aubin (Laval, Que.) won silver in the men’s synchronized trampoline. Soehn won back-to-back gold medals at Guadalajara 2011 and Toronto 2015 in the men’s individual trampoline. Santiago 2023 marks Aubin’s first Pan Am Games.
  • Karate
    • Yamina Lahyanssa (Montreal, Que.) won silver in the women’s 50kg. The 21-year-old made her Pan Am Games debut at Santiago 2023.
  • Rugby 
    • The women’s and men’s rugby teams took home silver and bronze, respectively.
  • Sailing 
    • Canadian sailors added two more medals on Saturday, one gold and one silver:
      • Lee Parkhill (Oakville, Ont.) won gold in the men’s Sunfish. 
      • Sarah Douglas (Toronto, Ont.) won silver in the women’s ILCA 6. 
  • Softball 
    • Canada’s women’s softball team won bronze with a 7-0 victory over Mexico. 
  • Squash
    • The men’s team won bronze.
    • The women’s team will play for gold on Sunday.

  • Triathlon
    • Canada won bronze in the mixed relay.
  • Water Polo
    • The Canadian women’s water polo team claimed silver. The women’s team will have one last opportunity to qualify for Paris 2024 at the World Aquatics Championships which will take place in February 2024.
