Amanda Asay
Biography
Amanda Asay has always been patriotic so the chance to play for Canada has been a goal since she first joined organized sport. She has made five appearances at the IBAF World Cup where she has won three medals, highlighted by a silver in 2008. In 2006 she was named to the tournament all-star team at first base as Canada won the bronze medal and also earned national team MVP honours. Asay played collegiate hockey and softball while at Brown University. She also played CIS hockey at the University of British Columbia. She currently plays in the Prince George Senior Men’s Baseball League.
PERSONAL
Family: Parents George and Loris Asay… Older brother Bradley… Getting into the Sport: Started playing at age 5… Her father played baseball in his youth and is a longtime coach… Loved everything about baseball (throwing, catching, fielding, hitting) and says there is nothing like making a diving catch or squaring up a ball perfectly at the plate… Also drawn to the strategy (trying to figure out what to throw to who and when, where the fielders should be lined up and trying to surprise the opposition when given the chance)… Outside Interests: In second year of PhD at the University of British Columbia (Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences, Faculty of Forestry)… Earned Masters of Science from UBC in 2013… Earned Bachelor of Science from Brown University in 2010… Enjoys camping, hiking, swimming, playing hockey, skiing and travelling… Teaching assistant at UBC… Odds and Ends: Favourite motto: “It’s a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness”… During batting practice has fly ball-catching competitions with a teammate to get the competitive spirit going… Collects airline and admission tickets from her travels… Nicknames: Ace, Barb…
