Andy Crosby
Team Canada Medal Count
Biography
Rower Andy Crosby made his first of three Olympic eights appearances at Seoul 1988 finishing sixth. In the Barcelona 1992 eights final, Crosby and his Canadian crew edged ahead at the half-way mark and held on to win by less than a foot over Romania in the closest rowing final in Olympic history – 0.14 seconds. Crosby briefly retired from rowing after Barcelona returned in time to row at Atlanta 1996, where he and his Canadian eights crew finished just off the podium in fourth, missing the bronze medal by 0.77 seconds.
A two-time World Championships medalist, Crosby was a member of the eights crew that won back-to-back silver medals in 1990 and 1991. In other World Championship races, Crosby was a member of the eights crew in 1985 (10th), 1986 (ninth) and 1987 (fifth). At Worlds 1989, he switched to the coxed fours and finished 10th. At the 1986 Commonwealth Games it took officials 45 minutes of reviewing the photo finish to determine that New Zealand had won the bronze medal in the eights over Crosby and his Canadian crew, who finished two one hundredths of a second back in fourth.
A graduate of the University of Victoria, Crosby was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004 and Canadian Rowing Hall of Fame in 2017.
