Biography

Sophie Schmidt is a four-time Olympian who won gold at Tokyo 2020 after back-to-back bronze medals at London 2012 and Rio 2016. Schmidt appeared in one game for Canada in Tokyo, playing full time in the final preliminary round match against Great Britain. At Rio 2016, she played in all six of Canada’s matches and scored the goal in Canada’s 1-0 win over France in the quarterfinal.

Schmidt made her debut in the Canadian youth program in 2003 as a 14-year-old. The next year she competed at the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup. Schmidt debuted for the senior national team as a 16-year-old in April 2005 but continued to play with the U-20 team at the 2006 FIFA U-20 World Cup, as well as the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championships in 2006 and 2008, winning silver and gold, respectively.

Schmidt has competed at four editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019. She also won a gold medal with Canada at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara.
