Biography

Susanne Grainger was a member of the women’s eight that won gold at Tokyo 2020. It was Canada’s first Olympic gold in any women’s rowing event since Atlanta 1996 and the first gold in the women’s eight since Barcelona 1992.

Grainger made her international debut at the 2011 U23 World Championships where she helped Canada win gold in the women’s eight. But it was about this time, when she was 21, that Grainger was diagnosed with hypothyroid disorder, which presented a serious challenge to her ability to train and recover. Working with doctors, she was able to push through as they found the right dose of medication to bring her thyroid levels back to normal. Grainger returned to the U23 world championships in 2012 and won a second straight gold medal, this time in the four.

She made her debut with the senior national team in 2013 and won bronze in her very first World Cup race. Looking at the medal around her neck made her realize that her dream of competing for Canada was now a reality. She went on to win bronze with the eight later that summer in her debut at the World Rowing Championships.

Grainger continued to compete in the big boat in 2014 and 2015, winning silver and bronze at the world championships. In her Olympic debut at Rio 2016, Grainger and the eight advanced to the A final, finishing fifth. At the 2017 World Championships, Grainger competed in both the four and the eight, winning silver with the latter. Another silver in the eight followed at the 2018 Worlds. Grainger and the eight finished fourth at the 2019 World Championships, qualifying the boat for Canada for Tokyo 2020.

Grainger had been a member of the varsity eight while representing the University of Virginia.
