Sydney Turner

Biography

• In 2022, helped win Canada’s first ever team medal at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships; the bronze qualified Canada a full women’s team for Paris 2024; competed on uneven bars, beam, and floor exercise in the team final of her world championship debut
• Won back-to-back team bronze medals at the Pan American Championships in 2022 and 2023; also won bronze on the uneven bars in 2022 when she placed fourth in the all-around
• Won three medals at the 2022 FIG World Challenge Cup in Szombathely, Hungary: silver on uneven bars and beam, bronze on floor exercise   
• In 2017 was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis and spondylosis in her L4 vertebrae; had to take five months off from training while wearing a hard neck brace; missed the trials that would have allowed her to compete at 2019 Canada Winter Games

A Little More About Sydney

Getting into the Sport: Was introduced to gymnastics at 15 months old via the GymBugs program; started competing at age 6… Originally did both artistic and trampoline gymnastics and competed at the nationals for tumbling when she was 10… Outside Interests: Has been accepted to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Iowa on a gymnastics scholarship and will start attending in the fall of 2024; plans to pursue computer and civil engineering… Enjoys reading and is learning Korean in her spare time… Odds and Ends: Aunt Sharon Turner represented Canada in swimming at the 1991 Pan Am Games, winning silver in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay…
