Canadian Olympic Committee Congratulates PyeongChang – Host City for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games

The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) congratulates the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee after being selected as the host city of the Games of the XXIII Winter Olympiad in 2018.

The selection took place as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) opened its 123rd Session in Durban, South Africa. Korea’s third-largest city won its bid to host the 2018 Games over two other candidate cities – Annecy, France and Munich, Germany. In the first round of voting, PyeongChang received 63 votes, compared to Munich’s 25 and Annecy’s 7.

“The COC would like to extend its sincere congratulations to the PyeongChang Bid Committee,” said Jean R. Dupré, CEO and Secretary General of the COC. “We wish the people of PyeongChang good luck on this exciting journey hosting the Olympic Winter Games. It is an event that can change a country, as we have seen here in Canada.

“The Canadian Olympic Team looks forward to competing against the world’s best in this wonderful setting.”

PyeongChang will host its first Olympic Games, after bidding to host the 2010 and 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The Republic of Korea lasted hosted the Olympic Games in the city of Seoul in 1988.
