Maple Leaf Moments: Wave Our Flag

Wave our Flag: Is there any single event on the calendar that makes the whole world stop, watch, engage and cheer more than the Opening Ceremony? The most special moment for Canadians? When our flag bearer steps into view, waving the Maple Leaf and grinning from ear to ear.

“This is just a beautiful feeling, among this incredible team,” said Clara Hughes after the now six-time Olympian led the Canadian Olympic Team into BC Place in Vancouver on the first day of the 2010 Games – the nation’s attention on her beaming smile. “I feel like we are walking into that stadium and we are one.”

Sochi Story: Four years later, all eyes will be on the Canadian athlete given that incredible honour to lead our team into the Opening Ceremony at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi.

On this day: On February 7, 1964, Canada won the gold medal in men’s four-man Bobsleigh at the IX Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck. The crew of Vic Emery, Peter Kirby, Doug Anakin and John Emery were the only Canadians to win an Olympic four-man medal until Lyndon Rush piloted his crew of David Bissett, Lascelles Brown and Chris le Bihan to bronze at Vancouver 2010.
