Canadian swimmer Elaine Tanner wins silver in the 200m backstroke at the Games of the XIX Olympiad in Mexico City. Two days earlier Tanner had also won silver in the 100m backstroke, making her Canada’s first female Olympic medallist in swimming. The next day she would help the 4x100m freestyle team win bronze, making her the first Canadian athlete to win three medals at a single Olympic Games since Los Angeles 1932.
