Chan looks to join elite company on Friday in Sochi
Should Patrick Chan win an Olympic medal in men’s figure skating on Friday night in Sochi, he will join a very exclusive list of Canadian medallists.
Only six Canadian men have ever graced the Olympic podium in the individual discipline and none have won gold. Chan could be in an even more exclusive group of one, if at Friday’s free skate he can overcome the four-point gap created Yuzuru Hanyu in the short program and become Olympic champion.
The six men’s figure skating medallists
Montgomery Wilson 1932
Donald Jackson 1960
Toller Cranston 1976
Brian Orser 1984, 1988
Incidentally, Orser is coaching Chan’s main rival for Olympic gold, Japan’s Hanyu as well as the current third place skater after the short program, Javier Fernandez of Spain.
