Olympic Swimming Trials: 14-year-old Summer McIntosh qualified for nomination Tokyo 2020

14-year-old Summer McIntosh stole the show on the second day of the Olympic Swimming Trials presented by Bell.

The Toronto, Ontario native finished first in the women’s 200m freestyle final with a time of 1:56.19s, narrowly beating out star swimmer Penny Oleksiak (1:57.24s). With the result, McIntosh is now qualified to be nominated for the Canadian team at Tokyo 2020 alongside Oleksiak who had already earned her spot.

“I don’t know what to say, I’m just speechless,” McIntosh said after the race. “It’s been a crazy year for everyone. I’m just really happy.”

The second final of the day saw Peter Brothers take first in the men’s 200m freestyle with a personal best time of 1:49.07s. Unfortunately he was just a couple seconds shy of the Olympic standard for Tokyo. It was Brothers’ second win so far at the Olympic Swimming Trials presented by Bell as he also finished first in Saturday’s 400m freestyle.

Kelsey Wog took first in the women’s 100m breaststroke final. Her personal best time of 1:06.77s was just good enough to beat the Olympic standard, qualifying her for nomination.

Gabe Mastromatteo finished first in the last race of the day, the men’s 100m breaststroke. He just missed out on an Olympic nomination by less than a second with his time of 1:00.75s.

The action resumes tomorrow in Toronto as Canada’s top swimmers look to break more records and qualify for Tokyo.
