Evert McLaughlin
Biography
Evert McLaughlin is a third-generation high performance sailor, hoping to follow in the Olympic footsteps of his father Terry, a silver medallist at Los Angeles 1984, and his grandfather Paul as well as his uncle Frank, a bronze medallist at Seoul 1988. He began racing competitively at age nine in the one-person Optimist and attended three world championships in that boat class. In 2003 he was named Ontario Sailing Youth Sailor of the Year. In 2006 he switched to the one-person Laser, which he continues to race today. In 2010 he achieved a career highlight in finishing first at the US Nationals and winning the Cork Regatta for the second straight year. Named to the Canadian sailing team in 2013, McLaughlin made his Laser world championship debut that same year. After placing second in the Canadian Pan Am team trials and missing out on the Games in the Laser, McLaughlin was able to qualify for TORONTO 2015 in the Snipe. He loves the challenge of competing in a sport where no race is ever the same, even at the same venue at the same time of year. McLaughlin says that being prepared for sailing in unpredictable weather conditions is “like playing a chess match while doing a wall sit and being sprayed with a fire hose.”
