Biography

A relative late-comer to fencing, Hugues Boisvert-Simard made his international debut for Canada in 2004, just four years after he took up the sport seriously. In 2008 he competed at his first Pan American Championships, helping Canada to the gold medal in the team event. He has since won five more team event medals at the Pan Am Championships, to go with his individual silver in 2013 and individual bronzes in 2011 and 2009. Boisvert-Simard has competed at five editions of the FIE World Championships, achieving his best individual result of 15th in 2011. A major highlight of his career was winning silver at the 2009 Grand Prix de Berne where he defeated 2008 Olympic champion Matteo Tagliariol of Italy in the quarterfinal. He stood on two more international podiums in 2010, winning World Cup silver in Lisbon and bronze in Montreal, helping him reach a career-high world ranking of 16th.

PERSONAL

Family: Parents André Simard and Hélène Boisvert… Younger brother Eric and younger sister Audrey… Getting into the Sport: First tried fencing at age 13 at a summer sports camp but didn’t continue… Played badminton for a few years before looking for a new sport to try and settled on fencing at age 19, buying a full competition kit in the first three weeks… Outside Interests: Enjoys fishing… Reservist with the Canadian military…
