Nirra Fields
Biography
Nirra Fields has been named to three Olympic teams. Fields scored 34 points and added 11 rebounds in six games in her Olympic debut at Rio 2016, helping Canada reach the quarterfinals. At Tokyo 2020, Fields tied as Team Canada’s number two scorer with 34 points while playing the fourth-most minutes on the team.
Fields has represented Canada at three FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cups. In her debut appearance in 2014, she was part of a fifth-place finish. In 2018, she helped Canada to the quarterfinals once again as they finished seventh. In 2022, Fields ranked third on the team in points per game as Canada posted a fourth-place finish for their best result in the tournament since 1986.
In 2015, Fields won a pair of historic gold medals with Team Canada. The first was Canada’s first ever gold medal in women’s basketball at the Pan American Games. She then helped win Canada’s first gold medal in 20 years at the FIBA AmeriCup, which qualified the team for Rio 2016.
Fields also competed at the FIBA AmeriCup in 2017, 2021, and 2023. She was named an all-star and MVP of the 2017 tournament in which Canada won gold.
Fields first represented Canada in 2009, winning gold at the U16 FIBA Americas Championship. She went on to play at the 2010 U17 World Championship and the 2011 U19 World Championship.
Fields played collegiately at UCLA where she was a three-time All-PAC 12 selection. She finished her career on eight top-10 school record lists, including scoring (third), three-pointers (third), steals (sixth), and 20 point games (sixth). As a junior, she won the 2015 WNIT Championship with the Bruins and in her senior year made the Sweet Sixteen at the NCAA Tournament.
She was taken 32nd overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2016 WNBA draft and made her pro debut that season. She next played in Turkey, then made stops in Hungary and Poland before returning to Turkey in 2020 where she has played since. In 2018 she was named the Hungarian League Guard of the Year and Import Player of the Year.
