Sophie Angus

Biography

Breaststroker Sophie Angus has become a key player in Canada’s recent success in the women’s 4x100m medley relay. At the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, she swam the breaststroke leg in both the heats and the final as Canada won the bronze medal. She contributed to another bronze medal at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, swimming the breaststroke leg of the final. That followed her appearance in the final of the 100m breaststroke in which she finished eighth. 

Angus represented Team Canada at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games where she won silver in the 100m breaststroke. She swam in the heats of the 4x100m medley relay that went on to win gold. 

Angus had debuted at the World Aquatics Championships in 2022, following her victory in the 100m breaststroke at the Canadian Swimming Trials. She would repeat as the champion of the event at the 2023 and 2024 Trials. 

Angus first represented Canada in 2018 at the short course World Swimming Championships (25m). At the 2019 Universiade, she won bronze in the women’s 4x100m medley relay and placed fifth in the 50m breaststroke.  In 2022, Angus was a member of the women’s and mixed 4x100m medley relays that both won silver at the Commonwealth Games. 

Angus swam collegiately for Northwestern University where she was an All-American in the 100m breaststroke as a senior in 2020-21 and still owns the school record in the event.

A Little More About Sophie

Getting into the Sport: Started swimming and competing at age 9 because all of her friends were swimmers… Every year she thought she would quit to focus on soccer but loved that she was in total control of her own success… Growing up in the United States, she qualified for the U.S. Senior Nationals at age 14 and competed in the 2016 US Olympic Trials… Outside Interests: Does research for a private equity firm but would like to pursue data science… Graduated from Northwestern University in 2020 with a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience… Earned a Masters degree in Data Science from Northwestern in 2022… Odds and Ends: Her father played professional soccer in Canada…
