Zachary Plavsic

Biography

As Canada’s top male windsurfer, Zac Plavsic has competed at two Olympic Games, posting the country’s best-ever result in the event with his eighth place finish at London 2012. Plavsic came close to the podium in both of his Pan Am Games appearances, finishing fourth at Rio 2007 and fifth at Guadalajara 2011. In December 2011 he earned his best-ever world championship result, finishing 12th. Plavsic won his first career World Cup medal in May 2011, capturing silver at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in the Netherlands.

GETTING TO KNOW…

Family: Parents Vladimir (deceased October 2014) and Karyn Plavsic… His father defected from Yugoslavia where he was on the national water polo team… Older sister Sasha was a swimmer… Getting into the Sport: Started windsurfing at age 16… Had aimed to compete at Athens 2004 but blew out his knee just before the Olympic trials… Previously played elite ice hockey and earned a black belt in taekwondo… Odds and Ends: Nicknames: Zip, Zippy (acronym for Zachary Ilia Plavsic)… Affiliated with Right to Play and the David Suzuki Foundation… Favourite quote: “Do or do not, there is no try.” – Yoda…
