Weekend Roundup: Father’s Day brings luck for podium finishes

From the pool to the greens, there were a lot of podium appearances for Team Canada this Father’s Day weekend.

Golf

Brooke Henderson made Canadian history after winning her ninth LPGA tour title. She now has the most pro wins by any Canadian golfer, man or woman. She completed the final round with a 2-under-par 70 for a four-round total of 267. Her career earnings are now approximately $5,765,641.

Rugby

Canada’s women’s rugby sevens team won the bronze medal at the final stop of the Rugby Sevens World Series in Biarritz, France after Charity Williams earned the winning try to beat Spain 19-14. This celebration continued from Saturday after the team locked up a top-four finish in the overall season standings, marking their official qualification to Tokyo 2020.

Athletics

During the IAAF Diamond League meet in Rabat, Morocco, Andre De Grasse raced to a gold medal in the 200m with a time of 20.19s.ย  Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev was behind with 20.68 and Ecuador’s Alex Quinonez at 20.30.

Crystal Emmanuel earned the bronze medal in the 100m (11.30). She trailed Africa’s Blessing Okagbre (11.05) and West Africa’s Ta Lou Marie Joseรฉ (11.09). Emmanuel also brought home the silver in the 200m at the IAAF Diamond League in Oslo on Thursday.

Swimming

It was a great weekend for Swimming Canada as they brought home seven medals from Barcelona at the Mare Nostrum swimming circuit.ย Taylor Ruck led the weekend with two gold medals, one in the 100m backstroke (59.88s) and the other in the 200m backstroke (2:08:46).

Penny Oleksiak took home the gold medal in the 50m butterfly.ย Rebecca Smith won a medal in the 100m butterfly (51.81s).ย Kayla Sanchez won silver in the 200m freestyle (1:57.58) and another in the 100m freestyle (54.28). Mack Darragh also won a silver medal, except in the 200m butterfly (1:57.99).

Artistic Swimming

Team Canada finished atop the overall season standings of the FINA Artistic Swimming World Series after a successful weekend. They are bringing home a number of team and solo medals to celebrate.

Softball

WSBC

The Canada Men’s softball team beat Australia 4-1 to lead their pool at the Softball World Championships. Canada will play the USA on Monday afternoon for their next matchup.

Diving

Peter Mai captured silver in the 3m springboard at the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Italy on Saturday afternoon after posting a combined score of 386.90 points on six dives.
