Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard
Team Canada Medal Count
Biography
Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard was part of Canadian history during her second appearance at the Olympic Games. Her bronze medal in the women’s 63kg event at Tokyo 2020 followed that of Jessica Klimkait in the women’s 57kg event, marking the first time Canada ever won multiple judo medals at one Olympic Games.
Since then, Beauchemin-Pinard has added several major medals to her resumé. She won 63kg gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and then captured silver at the 2022 IJF World Championships for her first senior world championship medal. She also won three Grand Slam golds from Tel Aviv in 2023, Abu Dhabi in 2023, and Tbilisi in March 2024, and captured a silver medal at the Baku Grand Slam in February 2024, and a bronze at the Antalya Grand Slam in February 2023. She narrowly missed bringing home another medal from the 2024 World Championships, losing in the duel for the bronze medal.
Beauchemin-Pinard made her senior international debut in 2012, winning a pair of World Cup bronze medals that year. In 2013, after competing at her first senior IJF World Championships, she won her first Grand Prix medal, taking bronze in Rijeka. It was also in 2013 that she won her first senior national title.
Beauchemin-Pinard had her breakout season in 2014. She earned her first World Cup victory at the Pan American Open in Montevideo in March and then over the span of a month she won the Pan American Open in San Salvador in June, followed by her first Grand Prix title in Ulaanbaatar and her first Grand Slam title in Tyumen, Russia in July.
In 2015, Beauchemin-Pinard won the first of her seven straight medals at the Pan American Championships. She went on to win silver at the Pan Am Games in Toronto. A silver medal at the 2016 Pan American Championships helped Beauchemin-Pinard book her ticket to Rio where she made her Olympic debut in the 57kg weight class.
Following the 2017 World Championships, Beauchemin-Pinard moved up to the 63kg weight class. She earned her first medal in her new category at the Tashkent Grand Prix in October. In 2018, she earned silver at the Pan American Championships along with three Grand Prix medals.
She started 2019 with five straight top-five finishes, including her first gold at the Pan Am Championships and her first Grand Slam medal in the 63kg weight class in Ekaterinburg. She also won bronze at her hometown Montreal Grand Prix.
Beauchemin-Pinard started 2020 with a silver medal at the Tel Aviv Grand Prix and then a fifth-place finish at the Paris Grand Slam before competition was halted because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She returned in October with a fifth-place finish at the Hungary Grand Slam and then a second straight gold at the Pan Am Championships in November.
In late March 2021, Beauchemin-Pinard earned her second career Grand Slam gold in Tbilisi and added a bronze a week later at the Antalya Grand Slam. With her Olympic spot locked up for Tokyo 2020, she elected to skip the 2021 World Championships to focus on training.
